The light blue of the flag was taken from the UN flag to honour the United Nations, which helped Somalia gain independence. It also simultaneously symbolises the Indian Ocean and the blue sky.

This flag contains the historical aspiration for independence from colonial rule and national unification. Although the country has suffered through a long civil war, this emoji also represents the hope of its people to find peace by becoming one again, just like the star.
